brokerages fighting terrorism?

I received this in a message sent regarding a securities brokerage account:

Please be aware that U.S. brokerages are now required to perform greater due diligence when dealing with customer accounts and, when necessary, request further documentation due to the United Stated Government’s efforts to fight terrorism and fraud and NASD Conduct Rules concerning “Know Your Customer.”

They were asking for updated information, current photo-ID, etc.  I thought it was interesting that re-sending my driver's license will help to stop global terrorism.  At most, a bank somewhere might end up with enough information in a file to help prosecute a case against a known terrorist… but infiltrators are pretty careful, as a certain government employee proved.
