Passover Coke

I stocked up on Passover coke this weekend. After checking no less than 10 stores, I found a Publix that was kind enough to stock several hundred bottles. We bought 14, and might go back for more.
As popular as sodas with real sucrose sugar have become, you would think companies would understand that people do not like the cheaper glucose-and-fructose blend that is corn syrup. High Fructose Corn Syrup as we know it today was developed in the 1930's, and was the topic of a congressional debate because of the known health risks of introducing it into the American diet. Independent scientists urged Congress not to allow it, as they believed it would give rise to an epidemic of diabetes (along with other pre-digested starches) and obesity. It is now the most prevalent sweetener and sugar preservative in our diets. If you read ingredients, you will find it nearly impossible to avoid corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup.
One of my blog secretaries loves Coke, but absolutely cannot drink it because the corn syrup causes her to cough uncontrollably. It took some time to identify corn syrup as the problem, but after several weeks of substituting foods and beverages with different ingredients we proved that she only has these coughing fits when she consumes a product sweetened with corn syrup. I also can not drink everyday Coke, but for a different reason. The corn syrup tastes rancid to my palette, and makes my breath unbearabe to myself and others.
For those of you who sipped and enjoyed Coke before 1985, your memory is not playing tricks on you. Coke really did taste better. It was also more satisfying, because your body can tell when it has had enough sucrose. There are hundreds of people who buy kosher for Passover Coke and Mexican Coke, or look for Coke from specific bottling plants, just to circumvent the "new formula." Maybe that should be a message to The Coca-Cola Company and other food manufacturers: remove the cheap, unhealthy substitutes from our foods.
I want to try this stuff! We should do a blind taste test.
